The decline of the Russian population is due to the collapse of the Soviet Union. Russia lost a hell of a lot of its people to Post Soviet Republics like Kazakhstan, Ukraine, Poland, etc... The current decline is due to falling birth rates and the rise of alcoholism and the death rate.

You see through my dry humor. Actually, I know about Russia in supreme detail, so it is no surprise to me, as astounding as it is, that they added nobody in the last century.

I guess because I was a precocious child during Reagan's administration. I played paper-airplane wars with my brother as a child, and I insisted on being the Soviet Union.
"What are your sources [on Russia]?"
I have a huge library on post-revolution Russia. I've read everything from Solzhenitsyn's 'Gulag Archipelageo" to Lenin's "What is to be Done?" And most the stuff in between.
