Britain's Queen Elizabeth marks 85th birthday

In London Britain's Queen Elizabeth II has celebrated her 85th birthday with a visit to London's Westminster Abbey for the traditional Maundy Thursday service when she hands out specially minted coins.




The Queen and Prince Phillip were married in the Abbey and next week it will be the setting for the wedding of their grandson Prince William.




The service represents the Last Supper in the Christian faith and reflects a royal tradition dating back to the 12th century.

@beardedswine I live in a Republic (Portugal), and I lived for about a year in a Constitutional Monarchy (Spain) - all I can tell you is that Republics stand for nothing, and in a sense of national values they are worthless, compared to Monarchies. I envy the British for having that Monarchy - it's only sad that people will only miss what they no longer have, when they have lost it.

@beardedswine You do know the British State get more in revenues than expenses for keeping the Royal Family, right? It dates back to George III, when he signed a Parliament Act where the revenues of the estates of the British Royal Family would revert to the State, and the State would provide a fixed ammount of money for the Royal Family. Basically, the Queen costs 60 million pounds a year? The State gets more than 150 million pounds according to that Act.
