Jan-Michael Vincent would be the first to record "Stray Dogs". Jimmy Baker himself would be the second. It was written by Jimmy in 1975 while staff writing for Warner Brothers, and when he played it for his friend Jan-Michael, the actor couldn't wait to try singing it.

After filming on "Big Wednesday" was finished, Jan booked some time at a recording studio. Jimmy produced the session and approached Warner Brothers with the product, but WB, leery of the somewhat provocative lyric, passed on the song. The record was never released.

The master tape was unfortunately lost when Jimmy's home in Topanga Beach, Malibu, was destroyed by the flood of '76, and Jan-Michael (thinking Jimmy still had the master tape) gave away all his own copies. Those copies are out there somewhere.

After leaving WB in 1980, Jimmy returned to the stage with his new band The Lone Stars, featuring players he had worked with over the years. As fate would have it, the drummer and fiddle player had also played on the original Jan-Michael sessions. Soon, the three were headed back to the studio where they recorded the timeless classic you hear today, with Jimmy singing lead.
