This month on Media Watch we look at several topics that have been in the news and on such programs as Oprah and The Doctors. The first topic this time of year has to be weight loss. More people go on diets the first quarter of the year than the rest of the year combined. The holiday season is over and popular shows such as Oprah and The Doctors regularly feature topics revolving around weight loss. Weight loss diets are many and it seems that each year a new diet plan surfaces only to be a close knock off of something already out there. Millions of people watch shows like Oprah and The Doctors, looking for that magic pill or magic diet that will take their excess weight off without any sacrifice. Unfortunately no such weight loss diet exists. Weight loss can be approached scientifically however. What we must keep in mind is that we are not all alike. Many of use have metabolic issues not shared with others, which can slow or prevent weight loss. To design one diet for all people is ignorant because no single dietary approach will work for everyone. A weight loss diet program oftentimes needs to be designed around an individuals own metabolism. Those who are carbohydrate intolerant for example, will not lose weight effectively on a calorie controlled diet program. If you have dieted in the past and have not had the results you had hoped for, consider contacting us here at The Institute of Nutritional Science. We have been helping people who thought they couldnt lose weight to success for many years and we will be happy to work with you as well. We customize our diet programs to the chemistry of the individual and these program often include dietary supplements. One of the biggest reasons why people fail and weight loss is because they are nutrient deficient. When our bodies are deficient in essential nutrients, the body sees this as a form of starvation and increases the appetite and the cravings in an attempt to fulfill nutrient requirements. By using a full spectrum multi-vitamin/mineral formula while dieting, you can greatly reduce hunger and cravings. The next topic in the news this month was of course, the big womens multi-vitamin study, which supposedly showed that taking a multi-vitamin supplement, did not reduce a womans risk for heart disease or cancer. Well, first we must consider the supplement taken. Did it provide the 100+ base line nutrients that the body needs every day? Its doubtful that it did. Next, did this supplement provide the added nutrients needed for cardiovascular health? That too, is doubtful. If a pharmaceutical company sponsored the study, then we can be sure that the supplement used was the bare minimum and did not have any of the extra supportive nutrients needed. Taking a Full Spectrum supplement with all the known supportive nutrients is essential if we wish to accomplish and achieve the protective abilities of a good multi-vitamin supplement. The Womens Vitamin Study, like others in the past, had much to be desired. If you are looking for a Full spectrum supplement that really does provide the 100+ nutrients that your body needs daily, contact us here at the Institute, for a referral to companies that provide products that meet our requirements. The last subject on this months Media Watch concerns yet another study, proving that antacid use and abuse can cause osteoporosis, bone loss and hip fractures. In order to prevent osteoporosis and subsequent hip fractures, we need to ingest and absorb adequate calcium to replace that lost during the metabolic process. Bone loss occurs daily and as long as we are able to replace this lost bone at the same rate, our bone density remains constant. As we age however, several factors can change that picture. We often do not ingest enough calcium in the diet and the calcium we take by supplement is frequently very hard to absorb. This is because by nature, calcium absorbs in the body only in an acidic form. Most calcium supplements are very alkaline and hence hard to absorb. Also, in order for calcium to be absorbed by the bone, several co-factor nutrients need to be present at the same time as the calcium. These nutrients include boron, vitamin D, magnesium, manganese, copper, zinc and strontium. Clinical studies have shown that the use of strontium alone can increase bone density as much as ten-fold. In the case of calcium supplements, not all formulas are the same at all. Unfortunately the less expensive supplements are often made of calcium carbonate and do little to prevent osteoporosis, bone loss, and hip fractures. In order to prevent bone loss, and hp fractures be sure that your calcium supplement contains these nutrient co-factors. Again, if you have trouble finding such a supplement and are serious about preventing bone loss, osteoporosis and subsequent hip fractures contact our Institute offices for a referral.
