He could be the men's Olympic Darling! Such a cutie!

(cont.)Plus, it would take some pressure off, because he 'd have more room for error. Without quad, he needs to be perfect. But if he had landed a quad here, and then singled 2nd 3A he could turn the final 2A into 3Lz without violating the Zayak rule. (I think he considered attempting 3A again, but stopped at the last second realizing it wouldn't have counted and popped it.) He was <6 points behind Evan, so if he had done a quad and turned final 2A into 3Lz, he would have won the competition.

Oda's situation is different to Mao's. Mao tried to fix her jumps all at once, which made them unstable\, so now she relies on 3A because her other jumps are not that stable.
Oda already has great jumps and spins, and he worked hard to improve his steps and expression. He landed easy 4Ts in practices/run-throughs - if he put it into his program it would be a cherry on top, something to convince the judges that he really is a major contender. (tbc)

Why? I didn't notice anything unusual... Though it struck me as funny that she seems so controlled, composed and cool, while her son is the exact opposite: spontaneous, emotional and bubbly.

His coach told him to leave it out. SOmetimes it's smart to go safe, but I don't think it was a smart decision in this case... :(
In the practice today he did a full run-through with a gorgeous quad and all jumps solid.
I hope what happened in this event will be a good lesson for both Nobunari (stop losing confidence in yourself!) and his team (get a new SP, do not leave the quad out if it's solid in practices).
