Ex Tasmanian steam locomotive M6 and a three car train of ex Tasmanian passenger carriages on the regauged broad gauge former Victorian Railways branch line to Queenscliff. This video was made in 1982 not long after the locomotive and cars had been brought across Bass Strait to Victoria, and not long after the section of railway between Queenscliff and Drysdale had been converted to
3ft6in gauge. The video starts at Queenscliff station and then there are some views of the train on the way to Drysdale. In the early days of operations, level crossings were protected by society members with flags. This meant that trains had to stop before level crossings. At Banks Road crossing, which is at the bottom of a dip, the locomotive had problems gaining traction for the climb up the grade towards Drysdale because of light rain falling and the tracks becoming greasy. After a valiant attempt to make it to the top, the train stalled and had to back up over the crossing, and then it make a spirited run at the hill. The train is then seen arriving at Drysdale. There is a new station at Drysdale today and a new railway yard as well as the old turntable which was once in Hobart. No doubt, M6 would have rode this turntable in Tasmania in the days of steam in that state. The website of the Bellarine Peninsula Railway is at - tripple W bpr.org.au
