Simpler presentation, simple white clothing, and everyone, including the spectators, seems in good shape.
This is the world we've lost.

Read all about it in the bigger, better, sexier 2012 edition of the book, SECRETS OF THE OLYMPIC CEREMONIES by Myles Garcia, now out and available on amazon. It spills all the secrets on how these shows (from Berlin 1936 to Vancouver 2010) are put together. With over 150 photos and images, many of them never before published. Check out the website—secretolympiceremony

Wow, very clear video for 1972.

I was there. This was, in my humble opinion, the best introduction of the torch and lighting of the flame to date (2011). No gimmicks, but beautiful, haunting music that dominated the stadium as the runners brought the torch in. SImple, yet magical. (I should add: I have been to 4 more opening ceremonies since. For lighting the torch. this was the best. Thanks to olypia72de for posting this!

@twintowersbabe That was some trippy music when the torch bearer climbed the steps. Was it John Paul Jones of Led Zepplin on organ? Seriously, a nice show. This was before each city tried to "outdo" its predecessor with ever more complicated torch lighting stunts. The '08 show In China was ridiculous. Hope London next year returns us to a more simple, straightforward torch lighting. My idea: detonate a hydrogen bomb 2 miles above the city (Mexico City perhaps?) and let the fire ball ignite torch

Irena Szydlowska won the silver medal in Munich and became Poland’s first Olympic medalist in Archery. And the soccer team took gold that year!!

What a beautiful simple ceremony! The Torchbearer is so handsome and strong. Everything were simple back then but I was born few years later, shame. I saw my first Opening Ceremony in 1988.

He said: "5758 runners are on the way since 28 July to bring the Olympic Flame, ignited by a sunbeam, from hand to hand to Munich." Then he announced Günter Zahn and his four colleagues.
