2) ANY throw to a pivot man should be made "uphill". An overhand throw (especially against a closing front) will have a downward motion to it, requiring the pivot man to make more actions than he should. It also breaks up the pivot man's momentum. The purpose of a feed is to allow the pivot man to catch and throw in as few a steps, and as little movement as possible. 2nd baseman rotating open, dropping to a knee (back), and making a sidearm or 3/4 uphill throw to SS is CORRECT!
The sidearm throw applies when the 2nd baseman is starting the DP. On a ball hit directly to, or to the left of the 2nd baseman, he SHOULD infact throw sidearm. This is because his momentum will be taking him AWAY from 2nd. To open up while moving away from 2nd, then get the ball to an overhand position is asking for trouble. 1) Sidearm allows you greater mobility and freedom of movement when throwing against a "closing" front side. (more on next post)
a better way is to step out your left foot a little bit out and go with the ball and turn your upper body to second base so its that much faster to urn the double play
Im trying to start anything either...but throwing sidearm? I mean yea some guys can get away with it but thats completely incorrect on throwing a ball..Throwing sidearm brings in not only missing the SS Up and down, but also brings in the missing him left and right. And dont say Never see a major league 2B throw overhand..watch some more games and I think you be surprised!Throwing sidearm is completely wrong..its just that some guys can get away with it!! sorry Ive played baseball way to long!!
I'm not trying to start shit but you will never see a major league 2B throw overhand on a routine double play ball. Yes you're right that on a ball hit toward bag, you either backhand flip or open hand flip. But anything that takes you towards 1st you should still stay sidearm. A 2B has no need to come over the top on a routine play.
umm yea you do..when its hit directly at you or to your left side, closer to first base..you only throw under hand when it's hit more up the middle on the right side of you...then you lead it under hand to the shortstop!
Actually you do throw over hand when its right at you or away from the bag..but if its hit to your right closer to the base you toss it under hand and lead the ball to the the shortstop!
