Sufi Dervish Ceremony, Turkey - Semester at Sea Summer 2009

The World Music class attended a Sufi Dervish religious ceremony in Istanbul, Turkey. The hour-and-a-half event evolved from somber walking and bowing dressed in all black to a sea of swirling white as they raised their hands towards heaven symbolically receiving blessings from God to pass to the less fortunate.

Back in the Ottoman times, they used to whirl like dervishes for the sake of Allah(SWA). I don't know what they do it for now?

Sufism is a type of mystical dimension of Islam that brings one closer to his Lord. Someone who practices Sufism is known as a Sufi. Sufism is one of the most important practices and beliefs in Islam.
