Probably the most commonly used set of applications at work or at home is the MS Office suite - consisting of Word, Excel and Powerpoint. Of course you have to pay a tidy sum in order to use these apps, but with Google Docs you can pretty much do everything that you can with MS Office - but for free. In addition, Google Docs is Web based so you can access your files from any computer with an Internet connection and also easily collaborate on documents with friends.
