This is a Nick Drake tribute video featuring the song Fruit Tree. It includes photos and lyrics. This video is a repost of the earlier one which was found to contain an error. My gratitude to the viewer who brought it to my attention.

Safe in your place deep in the earth

That’s when they’ll know what you were truly worth

    Forgotten while you’re here

    Remembered for a while

    A much updated ruin

    From a much outdated style

I think Nick was too aware of human feelings, strange things around him, the life force of nature, melancholic/romantic (as in literature) love, and his very own presence to carry on as many did and still do. He is such a special person. I can't help but love him. Or compare his lyrics to Walt Whitman's "To a Stranger" or Emily Dickinson's "If I Knew You Were Coming in The Fall". Didn't mean for this to turn into an analysis. I just love his work so much :)

I think it is interesting that this song is from his first record. And he is 21 or 22 years old I guess. Did he actually feel at this time that he would not be known in his lifetime.

Perhaps if he was happier he wouldn't have been so motivated to create light of pitch dark, to fill the endless void with beauty such that it swelled and burst. Perhaps he is a martyr of sorts, in the same way icarus was. I think there's probably a point, a certain peak at which you realize that death is a gift. And this is only a problem if you are prone to coming back down, as nick was.

I think he was commenting on artists/people who perish early and go on to find fame/love after death. That is my personal opinion. He wasnt a happy guy thats for sure.

It's incredible how he knew that one day he would be recognised as the genius he was

    *Fruit tree, fruit tree

Open your eyes to another year.

    They'll all know

That you were here when you're gone".

This is so awesome..you poetic evaluation is right on...I would challenge to say that the meaning behind this song has been done time and again, but when it is done with such candor and splendid placement of thought ...it again is another example of "on the shoulders of giants" or so to say....very cool...
