I just used a sensor to get all the ion frigates to follow, then have salvage corvettes capture all of them.
In fact, when I played Homeworld, I barely made any capital ships, since I captured anything that could move.
In the final level I had a massive horde of ships that just destroyed the enemy mothership by having them all ram it and I still had some left over.

Ah. well, in HW1 i found carriers useful for refuleing and docking fighters. Also, in the level (havent play hw in maybe a year so i dont remember the level names) where there was a taidanii base with radiation, i found the carrier useful for "carrying" the fighters safely through. for some reason the fighters always wanted to fly out of the safe zone when in formation, so i docked em.
Why dont you have a carrier?

In the Campaign for Homeworld they are, pretty much useless since you get unlimited time at the end of every level to build.
They are however quite useful in increasing your fighter/corvette/frigate production speeds if youre ever playing online.
As for the other games, on Homeworld: cataclysm you need them to increase your population limit whilst on Homeworld 2 you get one for free which is rather useful considering you have so many resources you can use the extra production capacity.
