The reason why I don't like this commercial is because the rape whistle is a symbol of victim-blaming, i.e. the idea that women are responsible for preventing rape from happening. It also gives an incorrect picture that the kinds of men who rape are freaks hiding in the dark, when they are really men you know and trust. Also, women are raped in situations (such as marriage or intoxication) where a whistle won't save them. The focus should instead be on teaching men and boys not to rape.

In grade 6, boys and girls experience the same levels of depression – about 25% say they feel depressed at least once a week. However, by grade 10 rates of depression in girls have jumped – they are three times more likely than boys to be depressed. For girls, depression typically stems from “low self-esteem, negative body image, feelings of helplessness and hopelessness, and stress.”

Many Canadians believe that the gender gap has been dealt with. Yet the gap in income between men and women in Canada is 21 per cent.
In 2007, the estimated average lifetime earnings for men was $803,000. On average, women earn about 65% of that, or $519,600. While women’s lifetime earnings are higher now than in the 1970s, given the stubbornness of the current wage gap it seems unlikely that women’s average lifetime earnings will ever equal men’s.

o In our society, gender inequality is visible in many areas, including politics, religion, media, cultural norms, and the workplace. Both men and women receive many messages—both blatant and covert—that men are more important than women. In this context, it becomes easier for a man to believe that he has the right to be in charge and to control a woman, even if it takes violence. This is not only wrong, it’s against the law.

Again id like to thank you for your response.
So are you suggesting that females face considerably higher levels of poverty and abuse and sexualization in the media, than males?
This of course, is an absurd claim, however id like to clarify that this is in fact your position.

Women face multiple challenges, from an increased rate of physical & sexual abuse, loss of confidence and self-esteem. You can find out much more on our website than will fit here.

Thank you for your response, however may i ask what these "immediate challenges" which newborn females experience to a much higher extent than males, are precisely.
In addition, i would also recommend that you switch your comment restrictions off, as "up-loader approval" creates an atmosphere of censorship and mistrust.

We believe that every baby, regardless of its gender, deserves the same opportunities in life. But currently, when a girl is born in Canada, she is immediately facing challenges that a boy does not have to face to nearly the same extent.
As a women’s organization, our mission focuses on women and girls. However, our teen violence prevention programs are co-ed, designed for both boys and girls.
