When I tell friends I use 'Ubuntu' instead of Windows for most (not all) activities - especially routine web browsing - they look at me strangely. What's Ubuntu? Ubuntu is the free alternative to Windows and Macs. It's downloadable - and can be tried from a CD before installing. It's relatively secure, and is quick to load and shut down, unlike some other operating systems - even on older PC's. It's also a gateway into a galazy of alternative programs (also free)...
Take a look. You may be pleasantly surprised...

  • Maybe part of why I think that way, could be that my system is really fast. Like I can boot windows 7 in 9-11 seconds, shut down in 5. Other than that, Ubunto looks cool I guess.

  • more steps, just like mac users do which is mostly pointless. I think Ubunto would best suit someone who likes to surf the web and knows they have a music player and a few basic apps from google to drop in. For me it would never work though. Not bashing Ubunto. I just don't see how it's useful. It might be fun in vmware for browsing, but then again, under windows 7 I haven't had a problem in a year. Instead of seeing convenience, I see myself being annoyed with things that I can't do.

  • Funny, but I can sit for weeks and weeks without it doing updates. And when it does, it's only 1 or 2. I keep images of my boot drive, so when if I restore, most stuff is ready to go. You probably spent more time learning about Ubunto, installing, configuring it then you would have just letting updates finish. And if Unbunto has no updates, I wouldn't be interested anyway. And like mac you have an even more reduced set of software, but if you have to run windows, then you've just added

  • i'm trying out to use this with virtualbox. there's so many different linux operating systems i feel like a complete noob lol :P

  • 10.4 will be way better! As they get better every six months.

  • cool!

  • Thanks for the comment, pal - good to see someone else using, and chilling, with ubuntu!
