He would attack when he didnt really need to.......great cyclist would have been discovered if Eddy Merckx had not been there.

I can remember watching this on a neighbour's tv when I was 7 years old, together other children in a small village in Belgium. We were absolutely devastated, trying to face the evidence that Merckx could also loose. But we kept admiring his style, he was battling with such class and character...

For those who don't remember: Merckx was largely ahead Thevenet at the summit of col d'Allos in that same stage and at that moment, he didn't show any sign of pain due to the punch he got 2 days before from a dumb spectator; he paid his efforts in the final climbing...

Anyway, Eddy remains the greatest cycling champion in the world, even better than Armstrong.
