Normally i use the external display port to extend the screen...
Go to the arrangement tab in the disp pref... then you can set where you want it to extend from and which is the main screen..
Bloody brilliant if you ask me. I use a 24"LED and dump all by background apps there and with a glance i can see every thing... finder windows, utorrent, iTunes...
and when you want to watch a movie just drag the movie into the secondary screen and click the full screen and Tada! it's on a large screen!

the background thig is that your descktop is enlarged, think about it like this if you put the screen to the right of an i mac it´d just be like another part of your screen.

@RockHardKidneyStone i would definitely wait. the new macbook pros came out and they have i3 and i5's in them. so, they are 20 times faster.

A VGA port won't fit. The MacBooks are too thin and there's nowhere to fit it on the Logic Board or on the outside of the case.
