This is a great new John Fedchock tune called "Breakthrough", as played by the CBC Jazz Ensemble, recorded live on March 12th, 2009. Lemme' tell ya': This tune is SO hip; when we get it tight, it'll really be great. As of this recording, we only had a few hours of rehearsal time with it, so please be kind in your comments (it's a pretty rough ride at times). Enjoy! More shenanigans and tomfoolery over at derekmunson.com!

  • you're creativity & precision is outstanding! listening to your playing is like eating butter, if you know what i mean :)

  • Gross! But, uh....yeah. I think I know what you mean. ;)

Just kidding. Thanks for the wonderful compliment. Glad you enjoyed the video. :D

  • Man it's so cool watching you playing!Your stile is magnificent! So relaxed but fast and precise as well. It's a pleasure to look and listen to you playing!

  • Thank you very much, and welcome to YouTube! I see that you just joined today. :D

  • You play very well!!! Great time feel and a major nice sounding kit with excellent cymbals. (I am a cymbal-aholic!!)

I know what you mean when you talk about seeing and studying the greats. That stuff is very inspirational to me and always has been

I have a short solo stint on YT and I think you'll dig it. Check out Randy Charles drumming at 60.

    Great job here!!!

  • Thanks, Randy! Just left you a comment on your channel - that solo video was great! I hope I'm still out there gettin' it done at 60 like you are, man! And I can tell you're a "cymbal-aholic"...the pies you're using there sound killer, man. (Also, kudos to whoever was manning the shaker - they kept right with your double pedal!)

  • Whaow ! Excellent drum solo !! I love jazz and funk. I think that i'll be a good drummer later finally the continuation remains to come ;) At the moment I learn rhythms of jazz and I to say to you that I work them hard. ^^

  • I hear ya'! If I hadn't been lucky enough to grow up in a home where music was so completely celebrated and revered, I would have been in a whole different situation. Luckily, my dad was a drummer and had the passion to turn me on to all kinds of different things early on, though, like you, we never got $25 VHS tapes either! It was all listening and emulation, trial-and-error...and sometimes, I think that's still the best way to learn (albeit the toughest way). :)

  • @drumology2001 on one hand it's intimidating, but on the other, it's so inspiring. When I grew up learning none of this stuff was available for free; you had to buy videos, and those were like $25/pop. I was a kid and didn't have money, so I tried to learn by listening to recordings. It was brutal. Technique escaped me.

  • Gah - you flatter me, man! I'm thankful that YouTube gives me access to people who can give me feedback (good or bad), and YT helps motivate me even further by watching all the great players on here. Just when you start feeling good about your playing, you can go watch a Jeff Hamilton, Derico Watson, or Dave Weckl video and realize that you have SOOO much more work to do (that's what happens with me, anyways). ;)
