Joe's POV
Papa Jonas: I don't know how I can tell you this, Joe. (starts to cry a little)
Joe: (in a light voice) What's happening? Is it about Emily?
* Nick and Kevin stayed quiet. I wonder if they knew what was going on... I'm sure they wouldn't tell me. I felt like I was about to cry even if I have no idea what's going on. I know it's about Emily. I just can feel it. But the worst part is is that my dad's crying. That's worst thing I could do to him. Even if it wasn't me that made him cry, I still can't stand watching him.*
Joe: Daddy, please tell me. I think I'm going to start to cry now too.
Nick: Joe, we both know.
Kevin: (nods slowly) We've been trying to keep you... Happy so that you wouldn't find out... But it's hard.
Joe: When did you find out about whatever this is?
Nick: About an hour ago. Elizabeth told us... But it wasn't her fault.
Joe: Did I lose Emily?
*Silence. That's all I got. Then there was crying. Not from Nick. Not from Kevin. Not even from my dad. It was me. I started crying because I knew I was right. I have to know how she... Died.*
Joe: (crying) How?
Kevin: She... Her and Elizabeth were playing around outside of the dressing room. Elizabeth chased Emily up the stairs. Emily ran too fast... She fell over the railing and on to the floor.
Nick: I'm sorry Joe. Really.
Joe: I just... I just... Never saw this coming.
Papa Jonas: (hugs him) None of us did.
Elizabeth: (walks in and sees Joe) Oh... (whispers to Kevin) You told him?
Kevin: (nods)
Elizabeth: (runs over to Joe) Sweetie.
Joe: Why'd you do it?
Elizabeth: I didn't mean to. It's not like I touched her. We were messing around and she lost her balance. While she was falling, I tried to catch her. She landed in my arms but slipped off. Joe, I tried. I did, really. I didn't wanna lose her. And I know you didn't wanna either.
Nick: Joe, you can't blame it on Lizzy.
Joe: I just... Wanna be alone. Where is she?
Kevin: Mom took her to the hospital.
Joe: Can we go see her?
Papa Jonas: Later. Why don't you relax?
Joe: I think I'm going to take a shower... Make that a bath.
Nick: (smiles a little) Baths always make you feel better.
Elizabeth: (after Joe leaves) I don't think she died.
Kevin: What do you mean?
Elizabeth: Well, I do... But there's a chance she lived. That's why Mrs. Jonas- your mom- took her to te hospital.
Nick: (dials his Mom's number) Mom?
Mrs. Jonas: Oh my! Hi Nick!
Nick: Hi. So...
Mrs. Jonas: I have no information on Emily yet. She might just be unconscious... But she definitly split her head open. Just don't let Joe know, because if she did die...
Nick: And we tell him now that she might have lived, he'd get his hopes up. I know. He went to take a bath. He'll be fine... I hope.
Mrs. Jonas: I'll talk to you later Lovey.
Nick: Bye. (hangs up) Well, she split her head open.
Kevin: I feel so bad. I could have been there to catch her and then Joe wouldn't be a mess and...
Elizabeth: There was nothing you could do. This isn't your fault. No one decided that we should try to kill her. I didn't wanna watch her fall to her possible death. Don't be upset, please.
Kevin: It's hard not to cry.
Elizabeth: It's okay to cry.
Nick: I think I have to cry. I loved Emily. She was like a great sister... (crys a little)
Kevin: (hugs Nick) It's okay.
-threes hours later, at the hospital-
Mrs. Jonas: I hope she's okay.
Frankie: Apple juice?
Mrs. Jonas: (hands him a dollar) One juice box, that's it.
Frankie: Thank you, Mommy.
Joe: (paces back and forth and talks to self) She's fine. No she's dead. Death is bad. No it's peaceful. It's normal. It's... It's... Heart-breaking. But she didn't die. Maybe she's fine, maybe she's not. It's ok, Joe.
Nick: (stops Joe from pacing) Listen: I'm telling you, whatever happens, we well always be there for you.
Joe: (nods and takes deep breaths) Thanks.
Kevin: (sitting in a chair next to Elizabeth) Should I sit this way? (leans to the right) Or this way? (leans to the left) Hmmm... This way? (leans to the right again)
Elizabeth: I don't frikin care how you frikin sit!
Kevin: Jeez! Someone's angry and upset.
Elizabeth: My best friend's almost dead on her wedding day!
Kevin: Sorry, sorry!
Doctor: Mrs. Jonas.
Mrs. Jonas: Yes? So... What?
Doctor: I have some news... I don't know if it's good or bad.
Joe: (screams) JUST TELL ME! CAN I GO IN THERE? CAN I SEE HER? TELL ME, DOCTOR!
Doctor: She's...
