Hungry ~ Pixie Patty

I read all these Books
I had numerous teachers
and still I am hungry.

I traveled to far reaches of the earth,
dropped down into the depths of my soul
and still I am hungry.

I have gazed at this glowing box in my lap
I have gone to the ocean and to mountain tops
walked the streets at night until I found a lost prophet,
conversed over coffee with accomplished men
in hopes of finding satiety.
No, I am still hungry!

I have gone to church and listened to the deacon preach
Listened to the Pope and the Dali Lama's speech
I have listened to the children sing,
poets rant, watched dancers dance
I have seen full moons set and watched the glowing ball rise.
watched my Grandmother bathe
and met my Grandfathers eyes.
Yet, still, I am hungry.

I go in search of the answers that will fulfill my need
to understand
the reason we tolerate the greed
Here in this luxurious hunger of my imaginations desires,
Nearly 3 decades ago
the only hunger I knew was deep in the pit of my belly.
My Mama got food stamps
I was still hungry.

The white powder crystals she put up her nose
the long days she left me at home
No food to be found but white bread and mustard
Ate that
But I was still hungry.

Food stamps only work if they get spent on food
So, often
I went hungry.

The deeper I dig to the pit of this place this emptiness begins --
the less I look outward to fill it all in
To understand the world, I must understand myself
To save the world, I must save myself
Tonight I sit and contemplate hunger, if that is my state,
No, I'm just thirsty
For now, I just ate.
