[Recorded July 28, 2004]
In January of 2004, two golf-cart sized rovers landed on the planet Mars to seek evidence about whether the environment there might once have been capable of supporting life. Originally intended to last 90 days and rover 600 meters, these two Mars Exploration Rovers, named Spirit and Opportunity, have far exceeded those expectations.

Pete Theisinger, the Manager of the Mars Exploration Rover Project through its development, and now Manager of the 2009 Mars Science Laboratory Project, will describe the challenges of developing the two Mars Exploration Rovers in just three years. He will discuss the design process, relate the myriad challenges and setbacks that had to be overcome during development and operations, and give the definitive behind-the-scenes story of the extraordinary flight and surface operations of the Rover, including some glimpses into the mission's scientific results.

  • it pains me that the public doesnt know or care about this magnifecent achievment. We all know who the next celebrity to have a baby is but no one knows about this.

  • Absolutely phenomenial, This gives us all something more to live for. how can we as people, not pull together and make funding a non issue? Why is this not all over every news channel, because it does not have a million dollar celebrity face on it? this clip only has 2035 views, but a video of how to play the next new video game will have 234,765 views and counting. WOW!!

  • this is as knowlageable as a world of text books put into 1 hour amazing and it is also like my imagenatiion of building a rover that smaller but can get across a rock or two

  • I wouldn't call this a "clip" in the usual sense. Nearly two hours long.

  • outstanding

  • your hard work and the rovers turned dreams into reality
