@RobinCarmody So where do you reckon it went wrong? For me it started with the 2-2 against Holland at Wembley - 2-0 up and they threw it away. Then the draw in Poland (Ian Wright) before the Oslo catastrophe and, eventually, the defeat in Holland ('He's gonna flick one, he's gonna flick one!') before the final humiliation of the goal for SM inside nine seconds. Hey, you gotta have some pain sometimes. Today I just find football boring - I scour the internet for old clips and photos instead.
This was the last era of qualifying groups being played at all sorts of odd times, rather than all matches being played in the same weeks, and the structure of it was demented, with Norway playing three games (this one was the third) before England had played one. They then got a draw at Wembley in their fourth game (and England's first), and we know what happened after that ...
