Ruined PSA: 19 Year Old Parrot on Writer's Solidarity Strike

from a PSA that never made the, well USA! LOL And Yes, I've played with time again!

Garthena knows over 50 words, but in this filming, she was in her "Mocking" mode... meaning she wanted to learn other words, so she was mimicking my lines, not the one she was supposed to do at the time, which was "Sneeze" on cue....

Garthena is just 19 years old and is a Mitred Conure...

That's a mixture of two of the largest breeds of conures, which are small parrots... And, before I get hate mail about keeping birds in captivity.. in their native land, these birds decimate crops that natives eat, and, well, the natives eat them too.. So it's like flying Chicken A LA KING... I'm sure she wouldn't live 20 years down in the Amazon and have play toys, special food and interaction...

I finished hand feeding Garthena, who was raised from an egg, which was laid here in the good old USA.

Garthena is registered, and is NOT a siezed bird!

Believe it or not, her best friend is a cat, her open cage stands on the floor and I have a free roaming cat... they mind each others space...with no problems...

You'll notice that she is kinda scruffy, she wanted to have babies (hence ena added to the name when I found out "he" was a she") and has a nest belly... and was also molting at the time of this filming...

We have shared a great life so far together... 19 years of having the same pet is a great thing!

Conures are also very smart birds, if you watch her, she is looking forward to the small lights on the front facing cameras, and shhh, there is a tele-prompter which I am not using for this silly ad I was trying to put together with my feathered animal actor...

But remember, when owning a pet like this, it could be a life long process.. some parrots can live up to 100 years... Please plan before you get any kind of animals... most of all you all should just stick with like a betta fish with one of those bamboo sticks stuck in it... which btw live about 3-5 years, much like most marriages..

Do you have any recipes for pieces of your ears lol? I had a mitred for 30 years. If I put her on my shoulder like that and talked.. that's what would happen to me. :)

I am amazed at all the people who don't even think about the amount of responsibility pets are and then dump them the first time they get "inconvenient" for them. I HATE people who do that, esp when it is cats or dogs they dump our near our place outside of town because they think the kitty or dog will find a home with one of the country folk. Instead they usually get run over or eaten by coyotes. GRRRRRR on those people!

Ahhhh! What a cute bird. I've always wanted one, but my place is too small and I'm afraid the cats would come out on the wrong end of things if I got parrots, so I just enjoy them vicariously thru my friends who have them.
