Just killing the bees of a hive that size would be a bad idea. Not only would you have to deal with a wall full of dead bees, you would have a wall full of honey. Without the bees to care for the comb it will rot and the honey will bring in new pests like ants. Honey is also a great moisture absorber and will cause the wood to rot pretty quickly.
Why wouldn't you remove the hive from inside? Seems like that would have been the better choice. With the use of Liquid Smoke you can easily do a live extraction from inside. I envy you being able to do a removal without using full protective gear. Now try doing that in Las Vegas, Arizona or Texas....whole different story.

@BeeMoney42 Yes, inside extraction is usually best, but A) we were reshingling that wall anyway, so anything done to the exterior would be covered with new siding; B) no one knew how large the hive really was, or how far it spread through the walls; and C) the inside wall still had the original, 105 year-old lathe and plaster, which we would hate to tear off.
