I started restoring my Lister CS 5/1 from 1937. It was in very bad shape! Everything was stuck or damaged. The crankshaft and bearings where badly damaged and beyond repair. So the are new. The cast iron parts where cleaned and de rusted with a steel wire brush on a angle grinder. This works very well for "flat" and big parts. The smaller parts I did by hand with sandpaper and a little wire brush in a hand drill. The fuel and oil pump are also completely taken apart and cleaned. New oil seals in the pump and governor housing. The pump and housing leaked oil badly.

I'm now working on the cylinder and head. After that the flywheels are cleaned and painted. I will shoot a new video when its running.

Thanks for watching

  • i hope mine look's as good as your's when i'am finished

  • @BOMAGBANDIT

Just a lot of elbow grease and time is needed to restore a engine

    Thanks for the compliment.

  • Looking good ! Thats a fine job , especially as you cleaned parts the hard way ! The method I prefer is taking it all to the shot blaster ! Fortunately for me there is a local place that will blast and then red oxide parts within minutes. You say you had to replace the crank , where did you manage to find that ??!!

  • thank you for the compliment. You can buy almost every part new in the UK. If you like to know where just let me know. I'm not sure if its aloud to mention the name of the shop here. The parts are Indian build and some times need some machining for a perfect fit. But that is not a problem for me because I have a lathe and a mill. I'm saving my money to buy my own sandblaster. Its very hard to get little parts clean with a angle grinder. Like to see the engine run? Look for my nickname: Redkrabby

  • Hi Midbrunswickgreen,

Thank you for the compliment! I know the paint job is not original, but I don't mind. I like this colour an the black details. At the moment I'm working on the flywheels. I also made some studs for the fuel tank. Some little things left to do like adjusting the fuel pump and the valves clearance. After that she should be able to run. If I have time I will shoot a short video of the state she is in now.

    Regards,

    Marcel

  • I bought a lister cs 3/1 and have fallen in love with the engine in one day. I will have to do some restoring as well but all in all she still looks good. Nice rebuild you have done there. Good job

  • You have made a great job of it and I like the use of the black paint on the smaller parts; looks like you have also polished the pump and pipes - something I have not done on mine but really should. How close are you to running it?
