I'm speaking from a business standpoint. If your software is useful, people will be willing to pay for it. Don't pull the carpet from underneath buyers by offering them software for free initially and then putting up a pay-wall. Charge for your products.
but what if you want to make something good for yourself and open-source it? you are missing the fact that alot of open-source software is the best on the planet
