Doobie Brothers

Songwriters: LOGGINS, KENNY / MACDONALD, MICHAEL
He came from somewhere back in her long ago
The sentimental fool don't see
Tryin' hard to recreate
What had yet to be created once in her life

She musters a smile for his nostalgic tale
Never coming near what he wanted to say
Only to realize
It never really was

She had a place in his life
He never made her think twice
As he rises to her apology
Anybody else would surely know
He's watching her go

But what a fool believes ... he sees
No wise man has the power to reason away
What seems ... to be
Is always better than nothing
And nothing at all keeps sending him ...

Somewhere back in her long ago
Where he can still believe there's a place in her life
Someday, somewhere, she will return

She had a place in his life
He never made her think twice
As he rises to her apology
Anybody else would surely know
He's watching her go

But what a fool believes ... he sees
No wise man has the power to reason away
What seems ... to be
Is always better than nothing
There's nothing at all
What seems ... to be
Is always better than nothing
There's nothing at all
But what a fool believes he sees ...
No wise man has the power to reason away
What seems ... to be
Is always better than nothing

Michael McDonald's an awesome singer! Especially when he sang in parts of this song in falsetto!

Yes, it confirms how our subjective beliefs can be contrary to reality particularly when we're in some sort of emotional state. We can't see it how it really is.

I haven't heard this song in quite some time, but it sounds like it's the ultimate herald to a dude stuck in the friendzone

Definitely enjoyable, a sort of gently backbeat.

May I suggest Chilly Gonzales - You Can Dance and Breakbot - One out of Two. Both I think are very much Yacht Rock influenced. And I'm pretty sure there's much more similar new music out there.

Lyrically this is one of my favorite songs of all time so I have to answer: the lyrics tell the story of a guy who believes a woman is in love with him even though she isn't. The lyrics don't apply to just relationships but to human nature: "What seems to be is always better than nothing at all". It's much easier to believe something is true even though "anyone else would surely know" it's not true. People do this every day. People don't like believing things that will make them feel bad.
