@tosh369 When I first started sprinting I was winded and out of breath. I also lack strategy in that I tired and lost a lot of ground before the finish line. It took me a few years to learn breathing technique which could be difficult for people who has smaller lungs. After I learned how to sprint and how to breathe while sprinting, I had a lot more energy when I finished my race and it increase by time and endurance. Yes, I was tired but I was not out of breath or winded. I ran in the 80s/90s

@phebeharris I'll defer to you, then. I, too, was a sprinter, but I could never imagine not being winded after a 440 yd effort back in the day. 220yds and less, I could manage. I'm sure training technique has improved since the late 70s. Or maybe we have different definitions of what "winded" is.

@tosh369 - sorry but you are speaking to a former sprinter. Everyone isn't winded after running a maximum sprint they specialize in. They winded because they don't know what they are doing. I never was winded after running. Being winded has everything to do with the lack of breathing inspiration/expiration skills. Something the U.S. has not mastered. All they know is how to run 'fast' and pump weights. They don't train their athletes how to be tactful and skillful.

@phebeharris - sorry, everyone is "winded" after running a maximum sprint effort. Breathing technique allows the runner to keep going for the race, but the thing called oxygen debt will, by definition, cause you to be winded. Your comment makes sense only when running distance events, where it is aerobic, not anaerobic, in nature.

@marchdisco77 I get what you saying, winning is everything but I'm saying the lack of breathing technique can cause one to lose or it can decrease your time. It also undermine your endurance. If you truly are a specialist at 400m then you shouldn't be winded or out of breath after sprinting. And the same goes for other sprinting events.

@phebeharris
as long as they keep winning its not an issue.

I wish the Americans work on their breathing technique. You not suppose to be winded after running. That's normally a sign of not breathing inhaling/exhaling correctly.
