On May 18th, 2011 Greenpeace released a report "Dirty Talking- Case for telecom to shift to renewable" exposing the misuse of diesel subsidy by the telecom sector causing a loss to the state exchequer to the tune of Rs 2600 crore.

Greenpeace sent several letters to the Airtel Leadership asking them specific questions, but did not get a satisfactory response from the telecom giant. It seemed Airtel was ignoring the demands essential to a cleaner future and it thus became important for Greenpeace to engage with them in a conversation over the same. On June 1st, 2011 Greenpeace staged a demonstration at the Airtel headquarters in Gurgaon asking them to switch off diesel. The result was that the company agreed to meet with Greenpeace over the issue. Greenpeace is urging Airtel to commit to a timeline for carbon disclosure and diesel phase-out from its operations.

  • I agree with the concern but it's irrational to expect security guards to understand your point. Also, destruction of property and vandalism is a bit too extreme just to make a point?

  • I fully agreed with the concern raised by Greenpeace, however it should be applied to all the telecom company including BSNL.

  • Airtel or any other Corporate, the story is more or less similar. These buggers will spend lakhs of rupees to purchase a good image from their CSR initiatives, but will not check the damage their malpractices do to the society at large. You can expect anything from the corrupt politicians running the govt.

So, Greenpeace guys, you simply R-O-C-K! Hats off to your selfless efforts.

  • Off late Airtel has become one of the most unethical companies I have dealt with & thus I shifted to Vodafone through MNP and realised that my decision was so correct. But this diesel issue is common to all telcos.

Greenpeace you are doing a remarkable job, keep it up! We are with you.

Disclaimer: Neither I nor any of my relatives are associated with Vodafone & Airtel in any capacity other than being their customers.

  • Well done Greenpeace. We are with you.

  • I m "fool for forest"....
