The deck-hull joint of the kayak is reinforced with fabric tape saturated in epoxy resin. The tape is rolled out on the inside seam using a brush on a stick. In this case I am using a Kevlar tape for the seam but fiberglass may be done the same way.

This series of videos shows the steps of building a wooden kayak using the "strip-planked" or "strip-built" method. This particular boat is a double paddle canoe design called the microBootlegger by Guillemot Kayaks. More information about the boat is available at http://www.guillemot-kayaks.com . Further information about the building techniques shown in these videos is available in the book "Building Strip-Planked Boats": http://building-strip-planked-boats.com/ For more videos in this series please visit: http://www.guillemot-kayaks.com/guillemot/blog

  • Why not try a small laminating roller or similar to wrap the joining tape around it will roll out much easier than using the brush, also You really need to use at least 2" tapes for a joining strip as there appears to be only half inch either side here?

  • You make it look easy! This was very helpful when I was putting together the Ganymede, for which I used a lot more strapping tape than you've used here. Are the strip-built deck and hull pieces more flexible than 6mm plywood with 6 ounce fiberglass inside and out? I would love to build the tandem Bootlegger.

  • nice bud

  • @icthruu4evr It isn't veneer, it is solid wood that has been covered with fiberglass and carbon fiber

  • Skillz.

  • ........Addictive viewing. Thanks for another fix.
