Funnel Clouds over Southern Illinois

These are funnel clouds that developed from rather small thundershowers just northeast of St. Louis in the spring of 2007.

it's the same mechanism than tornado , a vortex is generate by the mouvement of air between two layer of air (cold & hot).

its like a window for air through the clouds.

but these funnels dont touch often the ground, and they are weaker than a real tornado..its like to compare a Lada to a ferrari.

I remember coming home from Alton to get my prom tux.  This was May 4th, 2007, 5 or so in the afternoon. Coming towards Bunker Hill on Brighton-Bunker Hill Road I saw two of these on my left and right. Kinda freaked out at the moment they occurred, but they really didn't pose too much of a threat. I'm glad I am a meteorology major (soon to graduate from WIU)!
