i would think the ribbon controller takes some skill... pretty cool! anyone know of an inexpensive MIDI ribbon controller i could get in the states?

You're right. As any musical instruments it requires some experience to play well. In this video we used Russian national instrument in melodic major scale. So, I just filtered "wrong" notes realtime using VST note filter plugin and return back to synth.
