In North Carolina, first term Senator Don Vaughan sponsored and fought for "Susie's Law". Susie was an eight week old puppy that was beaten, doused with lighter fluid, set on fire and left to die. People were outraged to learn that Susie's attacker could only receive probation.

Susie's Law changed the punishment for animal cruelty from a misdemeanor to a felony. Susie's law gives law enforcement the tools necessary to protect your family and your pet.

Don Vaughan knows that identifying animal abusers and sentencing them accordingly does more than protect animals -- it protects your family. Law enforcement agencies know that there is a direct link between animal cruelty and violent crime. According to the FBI animal cruelty is a leading indicator of future violent acts. Senator Vaughan saw the opportunity to protect your family and worked to enact Susie's Law.
