"Dem?"
Demi opened her eyes. "Oh, hey, Nick."
"Listen, I know you just got in here, but I have something I need to say to Joe," Nick told her. "In private."
Demi nodded, leaning down to kiss Joe's cheek. "Okay." She smiled at Joe before leaving the room. "I'll be back in later."
Joe nodded. "Okay." He turned his head to look at Nick. "What--?"
Nick sighed. "So...you know, I'm just gonna get straight to it, this is the second time you've saved my life. You need to stop doing that. Eventually you'll get yourself killed."
"Danger has its way of finding me." He shrugged. "In those past two situations, I had a feeling that I was the one who was supposed to be put in danger in the first place."
Nick sighed once more, plopping down into a chair next to Joe's bed.
"Are you mad at me?" Joe wondered, looking at Nick who had his eyes closed.
Nick's eyes shot open and he looked at Joe. "Why in the world would you think that I'm mad at you?"
"Because I'm mad at me," Joe answered, looking down at his hands.
"Why--?"
"Because I'm giving up."
Those were the three words that Nick never wanted to hear his older brother say.
I'm giving up...
Nick stood up and sat down on Joe's bed, careful not to touch any of the wires that were connected to him. He stared at Joe.
He's the strongest guy that Nick knows. There is no way that Joe is giving up. He can't. Joe is only twenty years old. He has so much to live for, he has so much more to do. He can't give up. Not yet.
"Joe," he whispered, still staring at him.
"I don't want to give up," Joe said then, fighting hard not to cry in front of his little brother. "I don't want to die." He looked at Nick. "I don't want to die, Nicholas."
Nick rubbed Joe's back, knowing full well that Joe was about to breakdown.
"Then fight!" Nick pleaded with him. "Fight until you can't fight anymore. Fight until you have nothing left to fight for. But whatever you do...don't stop fighting. Please!"
"You won't be mad if I stop fighting, will you?" Joe avoided Nick's gaze.
Nick felt his mouth go dry. His eyes began to water; the back of his throat began to burn.
"Nicholas?" Joe looked up when he realized Nick hadn't said anything. He hated the look in Nick's eyes and the look on his face. He had probably just broken his little brother's heart, and he regretted that more than anything. "Nick—"
"Don't you DARE give up!" Nick's voice began to rise with every word, but he didn't care. Joe was about to give up without a fight. And he expected everyone to be okay with it? "You're my brother. You're my best friend. You're the strongest person I know!"
Upon hearing the yelling, Kevin, Miley, and Danielle hurried into the room.
Kevin saw the look on Joe's face before realizing that Nick was beginning to shake. He hurried over to his younger brother, putting his arms around him. "Come on, Nick," he said soothingly. He didn't know what had happened to make Nick this upset, but he knew it had to do with Joe and the condition he was in. Nick had to get out of there. He turned to Miley. "Take Nick down to the cafeteria. Talk to him, try to calm him down. This can't be good for his diabetes."
Miley nodded silently. She put her arms around Nick's waist; he rested his head on Miley's shoulder.
Kevin walked into Joe's room with Danielle behind him.
"What the hell happened, Joe?" Kevin wondered as soon as he saw Joe.
"I'm gonna go, Danielle spoke up. "I think you two need to be alone."
Kevin sighed. "I'm sorry, Danni—"
"Don't be sorry." She smiled and kissed him. "Your brother needs you, I understand. I'll be at home." She waved to Joe before heading out of the room and out of the hospital.
"What did you say to him?" Kevin asked, turning back to Joe.
"Uh—"
"What, Joe?!"
"I asked him if he would be mad at me if I stopped fighting." Joe couldn't look his brother in the eyes.
Kevin just stared at him.
"You're giving up?"
"I don't want to!" Joe put his head in his hands. "I'm sorry, Kevin."
"No." Kevin sighed. "I am."
