A sonnet by Angelee about the Virgin Mary in her role as helper of the helpless and hapless. Read aloud to Angelee's original background music, with accompanying imagery.
----------------------------------------------
She Walks The Shadow, Beautiful

How courteous her progress through the streets,
Securing favors, asked, for all she meets,
For wretched men who claim boxes as bed --
Since she, one night, gave birth inside a shed.

She smiles on runaways and detainees,
Who to high courts address appeal-less pleas,
Remembering this anguish she once had --
Her child went missing when he was a lad.

On holding tanks and handcuffs her love lingers
Where others count up sins with pre-stained fingers,
In crime-lord's dens, in hideaways of thieves --
Her boy had drunk and laughed with such as these.

At executions, she grants pity's nod --
She saw her son die so, though He was God.

  • My sonnet was influenced by Lord Byron’s “She Walks in Beauty,” and by something I had just read about Byron. I had always considered him a rogue -- which he undoubtedly was -- but in his bio I learned that his wife left him when their daughter was young, and he spent his life pining for the daughter he could never see. The daughter must have felt the same way, because she chose to be buried in her father’s grave.

  • Well, it's sure better than "She walks like a bearded rainbow" (SWLABR).

But seriously, the gritty imagery of this video was in stark contrast to your other videos. Here we see ominous modern images moving accross the screen as the Virgin Mary remains a constant presence just off to the side. What was that prayer Angelee recited before her sonnet?

  • The prayer in the video is the beginning of the Memorare. “Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to thy protection, implored thy help, or sought thy intercession was left unaided. To you I come, before you I stand, sinful and sorrowful. O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not my petitions, but in thy mercy hear and answer me.”
