Mountain Gorilla Veterinarian Project
In Support: Walt & Nikki Kalista

The Mountain Gorilla Veterinary Project (MGVP) is one of few conservation programs in the world to provide health care and treatment to an endangered species in its natural habitat.

For nearly 20 years MGVP has been helping mountain gorillas survive by providing them with life-saving veterinary care for human-caused illnesses and injuries. With teams of experienced personnel, MGVP veterinarians track ailing gorillas, and when needed-they treat them in their native habitat.Dr Mike Cranfield, the MGVP Project Director, tells us the story of these magnificent great apes living in the heart of Africa on the volcanic slopes. Following Dr. Mike and his staff the 80P team gets an insight into the day-to-day work of these relentless veterinarians in their quest to save the species.

The total number of mountain gorillas in the world today is estimated to be 700-750. Thanks to the work of Dr. Mike and his team, the mountain gorillas are the only great apes whose numbers are actually growing.

The team is Celebrating Rwanda by working across country lines. Congo and Uganda are part of the gorillas' habitat too, and for that reason the team must coordinate their conservation efforts internationally.
