"Pig City" was an all day festival on 14 July 2007 celebrating the punk music of Brisbane, Australia, from the '70s and '80s when Queensland was a police state run by corrupt Premier, Joh Bjelke Petersen. Pig City saw stunning perfomances by great bands including The Saints, The Riptides, Pineapples From The Dawn Of Time, Kev Carmody, The Apartments and others. Brisbane's "ugliest" band of the period, The Black Assassins, weren't invited to play at Pig City but, knowing no shame, decided play to anyway. With the support of Brisbane's community radio station 4ZZZ, three members of the band (keyboard player Sirhan Chapman didn't make it due to a stint in prison) smuggled in a guitar and an amp and played a guerilla performance at 4ZZZ's tent on the Pig City site. This version of their song "Death Take Me Now" features drummer Lee Harvey Hinckley "crocodile rolling" an effigy of the band's favourite Prime Minister, and later enthusiastic members of the crowd joining in. • wankers

  • Thanks for the comment Adam, we could only but agree that we're wankers, but we had fun doing it.

The crowd, including a couple of Queensland police officers who were watching, seemed to enjoy the perfomance.

  • Hi Betty,

glad you enjoyed Lee's tackle of the PM.

You can also see some photos of this performance if you look in the gigs pages on the Black Assassins website at blackassassins dot net

  • Thanks for showing this great clip. Funny how the Black Assassins had their right to free speech hindered by the Bjelke Petersen regime and Pig City tried as well. Guess what - they both failed. By the way, Lee Harvey Hinkley - also known as Tony Biggs began his broadcasting career at 4ZZZ in the Bjelke era and his music career during this same time.

  • What an amazing ironic humour. Love it couldn't have kicked down a better man.

Had a few refugees from Q'land come down here during Joh's time.
