The Ortner-Roberts Duo performs at the Lincoln Hall, Foxburg PA a Doina Suite.
Susanne's arrangement consists of three separate pieces and represents an augmented version of what is commonly known as a "doina suite". The term doina comes from the word for "song" or "lament" and refers to a slow, intense, non-metrical improvisation. Originally a rural genre associated with shepherds, the doina of Moldavia became popular with urban musicians: gypsies, Greeks, and Jews. It became the favourite showpiece for clarinetists. The doina is followed by a gasn nign (street tune), first recorded in 1920 under the title "National Hora Part II", by Abe Schwartz on violin and his daughter on piano. The last piece in this suite is a freylekh, a joyful dance song called "Lebendikh un Freylekh" ("Lively and Happy"), originally recorded in 1927 by Abe Schwartz.
