LOL, about the only thing this weapon system has in common with anything from the 1860's is that it fires munitions that are ball shaped and are unrifled. Nothing else about it has anything to do with 1860's weapons technology.
You cannot propel a mass, however large or small, without recoil -- an equal and opposite force. I don't care if you spin it around, electrify it, or photo-bio-chemo-seudo-metaboli ze it from thin air. If you propel it, it propels you back. Period. And if you're taking out a BRICK WALL with solid projectiles, you're gonna' feel that brick wall when you're firing.
@webnician Ever think about centrifugal force? For all you know, it's essentially a rapid-fire sling. That's what it seems like to me anyway. Essentially the recoil is going both ways and thus canceling each other out with no recoil.
