This video is a record of the START of a new project...

It is a recording of Edward Alexander MacDowell's 'Witches Dance' played by Michael von Zadora, performed by a Welte Red vorsetzer on my new Ibach 'Richard Wagner' grand piano.

I purchased the piano at the end of 2010, and so far have spent 5 days making it 'playable', including a complete action disasembly, clean, hammer filing, regulation and basic voicing. This piano has the potential to be superb, and the coming work will include complete rebushing of keys, hammer flanges, and re-felted hammers as the originals have very little felt left on them. In the even longer term, the case work will be re-finished.

I should point out that the vorsetzer, a particularly fine example, was simply pushed up to the piano a few moments before my departure - no regulation was done at all. Hopefully I'll update this video at a future time when both piano and vorsetzer are completed and regulated to perfection!

Many many thanks go to my friend 'mwmtj' for all his support and encouragement in this project!

  • two nice instruments sound nice with each other

  • An instrument of that size will give you a lot of punch in both treble and bass. Nice to see a vorsetzer still in use; haven’t seen a working one in years…. It will be difficult to voice the old hammers if they have been emptied of tension.

Before you decide to re-felt the hammer set I would have a look at the some of new sets coming from Renner (Wurzen AA) and Abel (Naturals). Good tone from the Ibach at the moment James.

Best of luck with the project

  • WOW that Superb! I think that the black vorsetzer he had befor playd a little better , thought;) But this one is great! i heard about the piano project , go for it it must indeed be a great piano! and the push up is getting better and better!
