Dr. Joyce West discusses recent findings from the American Psychiatric Association that the Medicaid psychiatric patients who visit emergency departments or are hospitalized are often between 18 and 35 years of age; often have moderate to severe symptoms of substance use, psychosis, or mania; often experience suicidal ideation or behavior, and often have been detained or incarcerated in jail or prison.
