check out my post on my site includes download links to the required files that are used in this video.
http://www.epicnerds.com/2011/01/20/how-to-install-custom-firmware-on-playsta...
You need to download several things and make sure you have the following prior to attempting to use this video. Also the usual disclaimer I am not responsible if anything happens to your playstation using this method. There is always a risk of breaking your system, so be sure you read and follow carefully.
You will need the following
1. Playstation 3 system
2. Original Firmware 3.55 (ofw)
3. Kmeaw Custom Firmware (Includes BSDIFF tool included)
4. USB Hard Drive or Stick ( Fat32 Formatted )
5. PKG files (optional)
You will need to update to firmware 3.55 if you are not on that already. If you are not sure what firmware you are on then in your ps3 system settings go to information and check. If you are on 3.55 then you are good, if you are not then you will need to update your playstation to 3.55 either online or download the firmware and install from a usb device.
This video uses Kmeaw 3.55 custom firmware. I can not provide a patched firmware so you will have to search google for a patched version or you can make your own. Making your own is very easy. Download the file above it will give you the kmeaw files and the tools needed to patch the original 3.55 firmware from sony. Place all the kmeaw files with BSDIFF tools and the original 3.55 firmware in the same folder, so be sure to extract all rar files and then run from command prompt
"bspatch PS3UPDAT.PUP PS3CFW.PUP patchfile"
press enter key and this will patch kmeaw to the original 3.55 firmware and create the ps3cfw.pup file. Now take this file and put it onto your usb device and rename it to
"PS3UPDAT.PUP"
then place it into the folder on your usb device
"/PS3/UPDATE/"
so for example say your usb device is located at F: your file should be located at
"F:/PS3/UPDATE/PS3UPDAT.PUP"
now take it out of your computer and put it in your playstation 3. Reboot to the recovery mode. To get to recovery mode simply hold the power button down until you hear 2 beeps. Your screen will now tell you to hook a controller to your ps3 using a usb cable. Then you will be presented with the recovery mode menu. Select update system and it will look for your custom firmware. Let it install.
After it has installed you are ready to go! You should see under GAMES menu in the XMB 2 new options. The one you will want to use is INSTALL PACKAGES. This is where you can install custom homebrew as well as the backup loaders.
Additional Information: If you want to make sure the patched version and original firmware are the same files I installed you can check your versions against md5.
Original Sony Firmware PUP md5 before patching: ca595ad9f3af8f1491d9c9b6921a8c61
Patched PUP md5 after patching: 2be5e87a22bf1e7f48e98fcabd38977b

i did the normal custom firmware (no waninkoko or anything like that) and it shows the "Install package files" but when i try to install the manager.pck for the backup manager or ANYTHING like MultiMAN and NOTHING installs it gives me an error (80029 blah blah) do you know what all that's about? i appreciate it man,
also, im trying to undo the custom firmware if i cant make it to work, any thought?

@KanonStrife im not too sure of that error, try to use kmeaw's custom firmware if you didnt already, so revert back to the original sony firmware then try my method from the video, you should be able to install.

ok One good question? i got everything down except for one, when you type in the command prompt to patch the firmware using the commands you provide I am stuck their. Keep saying is not a recognize blaaaa what do I do?
I think I need to browser it to the folder with the files then type it in but how do I get there what are the command to get to my folder
Mine is on my Desktop
blackwidow402 1 year ago
@blackwidow402 the easiest way is to make a new folder in your main C: drive, then you can type c:\foldername and it will go to that folder. If you do want to get to your desktop folder you have to type in on windows 7 "cd c:\users\" your username "\desktop so for example "cd c:\users\john\desktop\". So yeah go to the directory with the files and then you will be able to type in that command to run the patch.
