The Crescent Park Carousel was built in 1895 by Charles I.D. Looff, one of the earliest and foremost carousel designers. The Crescent Park Carousel is nationally recognized for its wood sculpture. Originally built as a showcase for prospective buyers, it is the largest and most elaborate of Looff's works. The Carousel contains 62 hand-carved figures and four fanciful chariots. Elaborate embellishments of decorative panels, beveled mirrors, faceted glass jewels, electric lights, colored sandwich glass windows and its original band organ music surround flying steeds to create Looff's "Total Carousel Experience."

  • For my reference, the organ is playing songs # 2, 3, & 4 from Robert Stuhmer's Wurlitzer 165 Roll Number 6827.

  • Thank you, what a great piece of information.

  • The organ is playing terribly, needs a good tune and other work!

  • Thanks for the video, and it's a beautiful galloper. But it's almost criminal to let an organ, which has deteriorated to this condition, play in public.

  • @petermackett37 i agree. in fact, whenever i listen to it, i have to play a sparta remix over the bad music whenever i see this. its actually pretty epic.

  • John Zalar is my favorite carousel carver. His horses- and these are prime examples- are just so hauntingly beautiful. This carousel is a real treasure! Here's hoping it survives for another hundred years.

  • @MrPollitogatito usually 10, sometimes 12, or sometimes fewer than 10. This is a great website if you're interested: wurlitzer-rolls (dot) com

  • @sirnim how many songs does each roll hold?

  • @MrPollitogatito

I have about 5 hours worth of recorded material from this particular Ruth organ in my iTunes, stuff from commercially-released volumes and stuff I recorded myself with a handheld recorder. Currently, I'd say there's about a couple dozen (give or take) Wurlitzer 165 Rolls in boxes stacked in the cabinet beneath the snare drum, and I know new rolls are added occasionally if the operator can place a winning bid for them on eBay.

  • @sirnim i saw a few of your videos of the band organ's songs. how many songs does this carousel have?

  • the band organ sounds like a mixture of good and bad but the music from 3:54-4:27 is awesome

  • I remember this from the mid sixties. WOW!!! WOW!!!. IT was so intimidating as a very small child! IT was magical! It was like a doorway into a magical world/ Several parts of the park were! What may seem like innocent fu to adults has strong spiritual effects on children!
