Here we have the two operational Tyseley GWR castle class locomotives, no. 5043 'Earl of Mount Edgcumbe' and no. 5029 'Nunney Castle' hauling the 'Welsh Marches Express' through Old Hill Railway Station from Saturday 16th May 2009. This video is similar to the old video, but it is shorter, without the diesel engines, in widescreen and without the music in the background. It is also the first video made on my new Windiows 7 computer with Windows Live Movie Maker (cheapskate, aren't I!)

The Welsh Marches Express ran diesel-hauled from Tyseley Warwick Road (Vintage Trains' own platform at Tyseley Locomotive Works) through Birmingham New Street & Wolverhampton stations, before stopping at Shrewsbury Station, where the Castles joined the train. Then, the train proceeded on to Hereford, where the engines stopped to fill up water and the passengers had an hour or two to look around Hereford. The train carried on along English and Welsh bordering towns and, a breif water stop at Magor, carried on to Gloucester, where the passengers were able to look around Gloucester for about an hour and a half. The train then carried on non-stop to Birmingham Snow Hill station, running through Stourbridge, Old Hill (where the train is captured in this video) & Smethwick Galton Bridge. Then, after a set-down at Birmingham Snow Hill, the train carried on the short distance back into Tyseley Locomotive Works, where the rest of the passengers were dropped off.

The train was filmed coming through Old Hill Station at 6:48 pm, virtually bang on schedule! It makes a change from in the second edition of Steam through Cradley Heath, when the train was between 30 and 45 minutes late

  • Glad you 'reissued' your vid in an improved version as it is a minor classic - it demonstrates what steam is all about..... The station announcement is very apt - This train does not stop - :-) It certainly didn't stop!!! It's going straight onto my steam hill climbing playlist :-) TU

  • @HughFromAlice Thank you very much. Greatly appreciated that you liked my video and that you called it a classic!!

  • What makes this video great is the fact you can here it's approach from a good mile away though unfortunately the station watoo crowded for my liking good stuff though !!!

  • I would have screamed if that man in front didn't get out of the way. But the fact that he did and there wasn't anybody in the way when you panned round does make this a " classic". Turn the sound up and play it again!!!

  • I grew up in Old Hill by the railway. The station is now very different from when I lived therebut seeing the steam trains brought back many memories of train spotting!!!. Mainly Halls on fast trains to Cardiff and freight trains .

Fabulous film - thank you very much
