"When I came back to the United States, I decided that if you could use propaganda for war, you could certainly use it for peace. And 'propaganda' got to be a bad word because of the Germans using it, so what I did was to try and find some other words so we found the words 'public relations'."

- Edward Bernays

This is the first part of a two part clip about a man named Edward Bernays who saw how propaganda in war time could also be used to manipulate the masses during peace time, only in this sense, doing it for commercial gain.

This is part of a documentary called "The Century of Self" by Adam Curtis and the BBC. You can download this entire documentary in four parts for free at http://www.archive.org/search.php?query=century%20of%20the%20self%20adam%20cu...

  • Thanks for sharing your opinion, Sonya. I assure you that it was dismissed accordingly.

  • its pitiful how videos like this have 5000 views, yet Lil Wayne- Lollipop has 12,000,000

  • Bernays taught the ignorant cattle to buy shares in an inflated stock market right before the stock market crash of 1929, which was inevitable due to the fact that the economy had become inflated with excess currency due to the demand of credit (free lunches) by the masses. The currency had become debased, so this was a brilliant scheme by Bernays and the bankers to immediately drain excess currency in circulation, but also collect the collateral of the sheeple at the same time. Simply amazing.

You use the phrase "holding companies liable to public opinion," but if you think about it you'll realize it doesn't work that way. Those with the money and means can afford PR--propaganda--and there's no public accountability office with the kind of capital tossed around by General Motors, Coca Cola, Exxon, TDBank, United Fruit, Starbucks, etc.

  • @ITILII Agreed.

  • @movement26 Bill Hicks and George Carlin....much more than just great and witty men, but honest, intelligent, perceptive commentators on life. We'd learn much more about life and living listening to these 2 than years of indoctrination in the public fool system... As for Freud and Bernays, these 2 did much more harm then good with their psychobabble and propaganda...look, watch, listen and THINK !!!

  • @LordBifford - God gave us the ability to be programmed.. barring biological damage, you can thank your parents or your keeper if your programme is flawed.

  • the barrier in the mind between conscious and sub-conscious is not there if you don't allow it to be there.

  • @LordBifford In my opinion evolution beautifully explains why we have these subconscious urges, they are the driving forces to survive and reproduce

  • @impatientp The litte waynes of the world are the end producting of this fascist propaganda.

  • Bill Hicks said.........."If you are in marketing, kill yourself."

  • Interesting way of looking at PR

  • @PantsThatDontFit My impression from this film is that PR does not program anything into us; it merely exploits the flawed programming God gave us.
