Expressing Your Emotions: Tip #2
Recognize the Difference between Feeling, Talking, and Acting

Sometimes it is not always appropriate to talk about your feelings. Furthermore, it is not always appropriate to act on your feelings. Adler and Proctor (2007) write that it is not always best, and in fact can be destructive, to act out angry feelings. It is recommended to find a better way to get out your feelings, if your feelings could cause you to do something destructive. In this video, Lyn finds out that her friend, Jenny, is engaged to someone Lyn does not approve of. Lyn expresses her feeling that Jenny is stupid for marrying this man, and then Lyn acts on these feelings. In the second clip, Lyn does not share or act on her feelings, and the two friends have a much better conversation. This demonstrates that it is not always appropriate to talk about how you feel, and again it is not always appropriate to act on your feelings. Again, this scene is exaggerated for comedic effect, but still demonstrates the concept nicely.

Note: If you do not understand the cultural reference, check out the SNL Dear Sister parody which can be found here: http://bcmoney-mobiletv.com/view/512/SNL%20Digital%20Short%20-%20Parody%20of%...

Also, I apologize for the extra bit of empty video at the end. Not sure what happened there...
