These are our turtles. I was sick and home so I cleaned there tank. You can see the water spots I didn't wipe off, and haze of new water and filter. Turtles are happy and healthy. No I won't change the gravel out, no I don't think they will eat it, no I will not change my setup, don't care what you think, or what you've read. Turtles have been alive for three years (since we got them), doubled if not more in size, are very happy (unless you try and take them out of the water). One is a RES, the smaller a painted. Yes I trapped turtles before, I also fish, andI also hunt so can call me a bambi killer as well. I've trapped turtles in the smallest, foul, most stagnant water you've ever seen.
They do have a basking spot, and a heat lamp the hot UV bulb. I still take them out and check out the shells, and skin for any sign of disease or wounds. It's good to take them out of the water completely somewhere they can actually move more 2'x2' for exercise, in the wild they will walk miles from one water source to the next for breeding, ect. I let mine out in the back yard as well from time to time.
