The song compares something real to something fake. Rhinestones mimic valuable gems, and are man-made The line "nature's corrupted in factories far away" is also significant. It's a comment on how we live. We mimic and abuse nature while replacing its real beauty with fabrications composed of plastic. We replace natural diamonds with man-made rhinestones. The world of Plastic Beach depicts a future where we have neglected nature and let industry run rampant. Everything is made of plastic.

Wow that sound at the beginning of electric pots and pans being hit is from Pete Gabriel's "Games Without Frontiers." He created that sound recording objects being hit in a junkyard and synthesized them.
