With everyone beating up on GM, Ford and Chrysler, I thought it only fair to post this rebuttal.
Could it be? Lean, green Toyota and Nissan hawking big, V-8, gas-guzzling pickup trucks and SUV's? At the 2007 Chicago Auto Show, they were promoting the Tundra, Sequoia, Titan and Armada like they were going out of style. And people were waving their checkbooks.
What a difference a year-and-a-half makes. Toyota's cutting back production on both their leviathans, having just built a brand-spanking-new plant in San Antonio, Texas to build nothing but. Guess their crystal ball wasn't working, any better than GM's or Chrysler's.
Nissan is going to stop building the Titan pickup itself. And who are they tapping to build full-size pickups for them?
Dodge. The American company all the analysts said relied much too heavily on big pickups, will be making a nice chunk of change supplying a Japanese car company with same.
EPILOGUE: Earlier this year, Toyota had to scratch the building of a big new plant in Mississippi to build the hybrid Prius, since its sales dropped off a cliff right along with the price of gas.
Karma, meet the car business.
