My HP DV-4 1220us laptop has this annoying flickering screen problem. I am sending it to service because it is under warranty. When connecting external monitor the video is perfect.

when entering to the BIOS the problem is still present
If you know what the problem is , please comment.
Is it LCD cable?? LCD screen? Motherboard connection? Motherboard itself?
Update (Aug 20/08):
HP customer service sucks::
I called to have my laptop servided, but the fucking idiot told asked me if I had antivirus protection. I told him that I had a free antivirus because the crapy norton antivirus license had expired and I am a student with no money to spend on that.
He told me that it could be a virus because free antivirus does not offer enough protection. I told him inmediately that it is not virus , not a driver or software problem, because when entering to the BIOS the problem still persists (the screen still flickers), how can a driver problem affect when it haven't even been loaded in memory and running?.

At this point I was really upset, and he told me he had to verify and enter to the BIOS. I couldn't do it because I was calling using skype. I was actually telling him that the problem is in gthe BIOS, it was something I had verified lot of times and he wasn't to see that anyway . Then he told me that if I was using skype the laptop was working good. I got even more upset, and I told once again that iot was a SCREEN problem...anyway he couldn't do the "verification" and he couln't give authorization for service. I told him I was not goin to waste my time anymore and hung up.
I'm calling tomorrow again from other computer to be able to"verify" what I have already verified.

Update: I called again and finally a non incompetent technician understood the situation. The laptop is going to service next Tuesday. Let's see what happens...

Update: The laptop is back from repair. The LCD screen and the LCD cable were replaced. I hope that the cause of the defect were just a bad lot of LCD screens.

  • that looks like an inverter problem , $20 , it is a small board located just under the lcd screen

  • @jaydfn . no it was not an inverter problem. The LCD screen was defective and was replaced by HP.

  • i have tha same problem n i talked 2 HP there charging me 400 is there any cheaper way n legit way....do i need 2 buy an lcd screen how much wud it cost ..thnxxx

  • @415francisco, well, if your laptop is still under warranty they should not charge you a single buck. If it s out of warranty, a cheaper alternative is to search on ebay for dead laptops of the same reference with working LCD, or go to a local repair shop and ask for a used working LCD screen (they receive lot of dead laptops with working LCDs, you know). It is not worth to spend 400 USD in such repair. If you can get it repaired for ~200 it would be ok.

  • @cdbular yea i looked around local shop n they said maybe 200 at i was lyke maybe itz too much so i was kinda hesitant but u said 200 im more comfortable being that price seemz reasonable now thnk you ...oh yea by tha way do u happen 2 hav any idea why tha screen actin up lyke thiz juz for future reference cus i only had mines bout a yr or so i was jus couple days away when tha warranty expired funny ha i guess they really tryna make that money lol

  • @415francisco, well i think that this series of laptops produced in the first semester of 2009 had a lot of factory defective screens. fortunately, mIne got damaged after 6 months of use and was still under warranty.

  • I have a dv41125br and I have the EXACT same problem. HP´s customer care was telling me that it was a problem due to my OS (linux), then, after 30 minutes running tests with the guy on the phone, he told me that i should send them my laptop. Its been more then a month and I still have no answer from them....

no more HP for me, they suck a lot

  • Watching someone else's flickering screen through a flickering screen is a serious mindf*ck. Thanks for uploading the video, at least I know what's going on. Now I just have to find out if it's still under warranty.
