  • I hike the Malibu mountains all the time. The area is a virtual tinder box. If I lived in those mountains, I would be freaked out by the thought that overnight campers were up there just because of the tendency of people to want camp fires.

    However, I don't think that anyone should be allowed to build there in the future. It's not safe or practical to have homes built deep into canyons that regularly become raging infernos. Fire is part of the ecosystem, homes are not.

  • While there may be a safety issue, I don't get the sense that "safety" is the real motivator behind the objection to this state agency's presence. It seems more about access and the disruption of what would otherwise be a quiet roadway.

    I think the camping concern is very legitimate since camp fires are so commonly associated with the overnight camping experience.
